August 28: My dear Sir

I thank you much for your kind letter. —

What I wish is to make an arrangement immediately for the early sheets of my next book — now appearing anonymously at intervals in a magazine — but shortly to be finished — & published entire in 1 vol. volume by Messrs Hurst & Blackett on the same date as the last chapter appears in the magazine. — At On which day I wish it also to appear in New York. It is not fiction — but a series of papers of the subject of women & their work & rigths — viz duties. — It is already being translated into Swedish — & I had wished Messrs Harper to have the American right of reprint. & so sent them by their agent's desire early sheets of the first few chapters, which they have not used (nor paid for.) I delay the conclusion & publication of the book till I can make these arrangements — but it is the wish of Messrs Hurst & Blackett that it should be out as soon as possible. About 5 of the 11 or 12 numbers (or chapters) have appeared: the book when complete will have various additions & alterations: — & I shall own it, of course, as "The Author of J.H. &c — the only sort of name I ever want to have on a title page.

These facts given — will you try to make some arrangement for me? — According to the satisfaction I get with regard to this, would I make agreement for a future novel, now just began upon — However that is too soon to talk of —

I will not say how grateful I feel — when I have no claim on you but that of simple kindliness. — My love to your wife. Very glad she is better.

Yours most sincerely Dinah Mulock

I shall be very much obliged for the German John Halifax. — I know Tauchnitz has it in English, but I have never seen it in German.
