Thursday — Dearest friend

I would fain please you not only in intention but in effect. I tried the Desert again this morning – will this do if not too late? It is quite different to the other which was an allegory from beginning to end – & never meant to meddle with introduce camel-drivers, Arabs, or any thing of the sort – Ben is delighted that you don’t like it – he hates it himself! – Poor thing! but I suppose no good could come of it – being copiously written in your pew during a sermon of Mr. Irons!

I am amused at Mr. Hall’s sudden falling in love with Dryads – Oreads &c – I did the rural myself pretty well – at Dover it was very nice – but how can you have the heart to give up that dear house. I wish some good fairy would give me £1000 a year & let me step in after you – seizing a garden, mulberry-tree & all – I must come & see both soon – Of course only regarding you in the light of an incidental blessing.

Goodbye – (to leave the 12 post – ) Ever your affec affectionate DMM –

For the rest of your good kind work – you know that every one who praises Ben wins from me double love & thanks –
