Oct October 31st/84 1884 The Corner House, Shortlands R.O. Kent. Dear Mr. Lowell

In sending the enclosed card of formal invitation to the marriage where you have kindly consented to be nominal "father" — I being "mother" for the occassion — May I add a word? —

Forty years ago, Mr Mudie (of the Library) consulted my father about reprinting some poems by "a young man named Lowell" — The answer was — "Ask my daughter". I was a girl in my teens, first beginning to write. — The volume appeared — I have it still. Therefore, it is a double pleasure to welcome you to my house, & to feel that you — & perhaps I myself — have a rather good account to render of these forty years.

Believe meVery truly yours DMCraik.
