Camp 9th Regt near Alexandria Va Dear Nellie

I received your kind and welcome letter last evening and it gives me great pleasure to know that you are in the enjoyment of good Health as this leaves me at present

Dear Nellie

Since writing my last we have had about the hardest time that we have had since I enlisted

The day before yesterday we marched at Daybreak during a heavy rain storm from outside the Town of Fairfax to our present encampment a distance of 14 miles during our journey

we sometimes had to wade up to our knees in Water and at other places we had to halt until temporary Bridges were built during the whole day it rained as hard as I ever saw it Rain

Just imagine how we must have felt completely wet through with a heavy knapsak ck on our backs and 18 hard Buiscit for 3 days rations and them all spoiled with the rain all the under cloths that were in our knapsacks were wet wet through and of course we had no cloths to change So we had to let our cloths dry on our backs

Today is fair but very clold and we have not had anything to eat for the last 24 hours I tell you what it is this looks like soldiering with a vengeance We shall start tomorrow I believe for Richmond or Norfolk

There are about 70,000 Troops going, with Genl Mclellan in command we are to take shipping at alexandria for some of these 2 Places

Dear Nellie

Capt Scanlin arrived at our Camp with his Recruits yesterday and he looks very well indeed as does all his men they are a fine lot of men indeed

Joe Scanlin looks very well indeed he is got many acquaintances in this Regt and they were all very glad to see him he slept with me last night The Capt and Joe’s thing are in my Tent until the Capts Tent is put up

The Capt left all the things that were sent in his care at washington and I dont know

when he will go after them I almost forgot to mention a little amusing incident that occured while we were on the march

One of our men saw an old Colored women about 80 Years old so off he goes and kisses the old Nigger wench which caused quite a laugh all through the ranks

Dear Nellie
